Product Notes
Topper Returns is an American supernatural comedy starring Roland Young, Joan Blondell, Billie Burke, and Carole Landis. Wealthy young heiress Ann Carrington (Carole Landis) and her best friend Gail Richards (Joan Blondell) are speeding along in a taxi driven by Bob when a figure in black aims a rifle at the taxi and blows out the rear tire. The taxi flips over at the edge of a cliff and Bob works to extract the two women from the taxi as he goes back to a garage to seek help. The girls try to get passing cars to stop and give them a ride, and finally a man in a sports car stops. The driver is Cosmo Topper (Roland Young), a dithering banker, and the husband of Clara (Billie Burke). The girls insist on being driven to the Carrington mansion. Gail finds the mansion incredibly spooky - doors open and shut, cushions depress, voices are heard and footprints appear on the snowy walkways. She is even more frightened when she is murdered by a costumed figure when it was Ann that was the intended victim. Gail's ghost reaches out to Topper who is inexplicably sensitive to the spirit world and they bumble along together to solve her murder. This is an extraordinarily funny supernatural movie and goes down as one of the classic 'ghost' stories of all time! (88 minutes - 1941 - Black & White - 4:3)
