The initial four tribes are evenly divided according to ethnicity (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and White) - the Manihiki, the Aitutaki, the Puka Puka, and the Rarotonga. The season opens with one castaway stealing a chicken and paying a dire price. Then a simple exchange of words is mistaken for a proclamation of love. Later, two castaways change the game when they accept the mutiny offer and choose to leave their own tribe to join the opposition.
