As a young boy struggling to deal with his upbringing by a schizophrenic mother (Mary Stuart Masterson), Luke Nightingale (Miles Robbins) coped by confiding in his assertive imaginary friend Daniel. Now a reticent college freshman, Luke let's a grown Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) back in his life-and it soon becomes obvious that Daniel's input is anything but benign.
