Aging author Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) returns to the States after two decades in the UK and decides-despite his advancing years-to hike the Appalachian Trail. On his wife's (Emma Thompson) insistence that he not go it alone, Bill brings old pal Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) along on his ambitious trek which becomes a hilariously poignant journey for both of them.
